Why it helps

Go in knowing the format and the topics, so the test is a formality.

A mock exam question with four answers and a timer

To work on most UK sites as an electrician or apprentice you need an ECS card, and for that you need to pass the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) assessment. It's a multiple-choice test on everything from manual handling to working at height and electrical safety.

ProBits has revision questions on every topic in the test, each with an explanation, and full mock tests against the clock, so you go in knowing the format and the topics.

The questions cover the law and your duties on site, accidents and reporting, PPE, health and hygiene, fire, working at height, tools and equipment, hazards such as asbestos and buried services, electrical safety and the environment. Each topic can be practised on its own, so you can spend your time where you need it most.

Mock tests mix questions from every topic, the way the real assessment does, and show your score and the questions you got wrong at the end. Going back over those questions, and reading why each answer is right, is the quickest way to close the gaps before your test day. The sample question further down this page is one of the practice questions, shown with its explanation, so you can see the style before you sign up.

How to use it

  1. 1Pick a topic and answer its questions. Every answer comes with an explanation, so you learn why as well as what.
  2. 2Go back to the topics you find hardest until you're getting them right first time.
  3. 3Sit a full mock test against the clock to get used to the format and the timing.
  4. 4Repeat the mock tests until you're passing comfortably, then book the real assessment.

Try a sample question

After isolating, you need to prove a circuit is dead. What is the FIRST step?

  1. ACheck between line and earth
  2. BCheck between line and neutral
  3. CMake sure the equipment isn't working
  4. DProve the voltage detector works
Show the answer

Answer: D. First prove the voltage detector works, on a proving unit, known live source or built-in test. Otherwise a 'dead' reading means nothing.

Questions about this course

Is this the official ECS test?
No. It's revision practice for the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental assessment. You book and sit the real test through ECS.
Are the questions the real test questions?
No. The questions are written to cover the same topics in the same multiple-choice style, so you practise the knowledge, not memorise answers.
Do I need the HS&E assessment for my ECS card?
Most ECS cards need a pass in the Health, Safety and Environmental assessment as well as the right qualifications. Check the ECS website for the card you're applying for, because the rules can change.
Can I practise on my phone?
Yes. Every page is built for phones first, so you can revise on your break or on the way to site, and your progress follows you between devices.
How much does it cost?
One subscription opens every course: £6.49 a month or £57 a year. Every new account starts with 14 days free, and you can cancel any time.
